Wet Christmas in Wales Part 2

Image
Hi all, This post is a continuation from my post yesterday on my recent trip to Wales. Day 3 We started the day quite early as we wanted to cover a lot of places today and the weather looks promising. We departed from our accommodation around 8 in the morning and the first stop was Newport Sands Beach, a beautiful beach with breathtaking view and surroundings. The place was filled with families taking their children and dogs out for a walk. Its very family friendly. After that we went to Strumble Head Lighthouse which I think is still a functional lighthouse at present. The panorama around this area was seriously beautiful especially the cliffs and the sea. The only downside was the weather. Well, what do you expect on a winder day in the UK. This is the best that we can get and at least it didn't rain. Thank God. The next destination was an ex quarry area turned into the bluest ever lagoon I've ever see and hence the name of the place, Blue Lagoon. Th

Wet Christmas in Wales Part 1

Image
Hi all, I just came back from a weekend road trip to Wales. It was a 4 days 3 nights with the Snowdon gang plus another family. As my sister said, geng makcik-makcik. Since I'm currently residing in Bristol, I have to go to Coventry on Xmas Eve to meet up with the others as our journey starts from there.  Day 1 We were supposed to start our journey at 5 am as daylight was very limited during winter season and we wanted to get as much out of it as possible. However, my friend's car decided that it was too cold and want to stay in bed (read: car won't start). Luckily she has good neighbors that helped her out and managed to jump start the car with another car. At about 6.45 am we started our journey to the first pit stop of Brecon Beacon National Park. We had high hope for the day to do some walking around the national park. Sadly the weather decided to betrayed us as it rained heavily the whole day. So when we went to Breacon Beacon Information Centre to meet up

Mary Poppins: The Musical

Image
Hi all, Last night I went out in the storm to watch Mary Poppins The Musical at Bristol Hippodrome. I think out of all the musicals that I've watched to date (I have not watch that many, this is only my 4th), this was the best out of all of it. It even surpass Wicked, which was my favourite till yesterday.  The official poster All I can say was that the show was perfect in every way. From the pop-up book like of 17 Cherry Tree Lane, Upside down chimney sweeper and Mary Poppins flying out into the crowd at the end of the show. Not to mention the songs were also great as well. Even for someone who already watched the movie like me. I would really recommend this musical to theatre lovers.  It's now showing at Bristol till the 28th of November. But it will tour other parts of the country after the show finishes here. Here's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious for you:

New Reads

Image
To keep me busy in the next few months These came in the mail today after I was tempted with the offer from The Works. Imagine these 6 book for 10pounds. Quite a good bargain right. I can never resist the temptation of books after foods..hehe. Well, I hope these books will keep me busy for the next few months till I go back home and I can't wait to dive into these books.

Book Review: Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck

Image
Hi all, I just finished reading a book by a well-known Indonesian writer called Hamka entitled Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck (The Sinking of Van der Wijck). I think this is the best book that I've read so far and I really enjoyed reading this book. The language is so beautiful although the story is quite sad. I do not know whether the book is available in English or not as the original book is in Indonesian language. I tried reading the one in Indonesian language but it was quite hard to understand. So I opt for a Malaysian version by PTS that is a bit easier to understand with a list of glossary of words at the back. The book - Indonesian version  The book - Malaysian version So, if you're thinking of reading a new book; I would really recommend this book by Hamka. There's also a movie of the same title which I've still yet to watch. Hence, I can't give a review of the movie yet. Will do so once I've watched it. Poster of the movie

The Birmingham Quran manuscript

Image
Hi all, I saw in the news a few months back about an old Quran manuscript that was found at the University of Birmingham and I was really excited as they news mentioned it could be from the Prophet Muhammad's time. So, when I heard that they were going to display the manuscript at the University of Birmingham (so close to Coventry, but I still have to take 2 trains to get there), I had to go there and see it for myself. To get there, I took the train from Canley to Birmingham New Street and then changed train to University. The exhibition hall is about 10minutes from the University train station. Here are some photos of the manuscript, photos have to be taken without flash to protect the manuscript. The page on the right contains Surah Kahfi verses 23-31, while the pages on the left contain Surah Maryam verses 91-98 (above the red line) and Surah Taha verses 1-13 (below the red line). So the red line on the left page marks the end of Surah Maryam and the sta

Unleashing the inner child in me

Hi all, So I've been seeing a lot of adult coloring books at the bookstores lately and it kind of drawn me to them. Thinking back, I think every kids like to colour at certain point when they're growing up and I'm no exception. Every time I go into a bookstore (Yes, I'm a bookworm and bookstores are my kind of heaven) and looked at the prices of these coloring books, oh my these books are so out of my budget. But a week ago, I went into The Works website to look for a story book (they have quite a good bargain for books) and found that they have colouring books that are within my budget. So, the outcome was not 1 or 2 but I ended up buying 3 coloring books; and they only cost me GBP 10. Quite a good bargain right? My 'damage' from The Works. Sorry for my lack of photography skills. I was so excited, and this was teh result of that. If people ask me what I'm currently doing, I'll reply I'm colouring books in my free time..hehe. You should g

Again, I am thankful

Hi all, It's been a nerve wrecking day for me as my MSc result came out today. Alhamdulillah I made it to the 'D' list. I am ever thankful to Allah the Almighty for allowing me to complete my Master's with flying colours. Thank you to my family and friends for the 'support' and for all the prayers. I would not have made it without all of you. Now, I can just look forward to my graduation in January and then head back home to my beloved family. Till then~

Crush The Musical

Image
I went to watch a musical at Belgrade Theatre tonight. I've always wanted to watch a theatre once here in Coventry and I finally decided to do it today. It was kind of last minute as I only bought the ticket in the afternoon and the show will close its curtain in Coventry this Saturday. Crush at Belgrade Theatre A good seat for less than 20pounds (student price). Oh Yeah! The show is called Crush the Musical and it's about an all girls boarding school trying to save their school from the new tyrant headmistress that wants to change the school to a strict Victorian values. The setting of the story was in the 1960s and it's something like Malory Towers and St Trinians mixed into one show. With only a total of 12 casts, they managed to put on a good show. Especially for a new musical like this one. I really enjoyed the tap dance with the hockey sticks part. This is also a Belgrade Threatre co-produced show, hence the reason why they open the show in Coven

Visiting William Shakespeare

Image
Hi there, Now that I'm done with student life, I can finally update my travel stories here. Especially the places that I visited in the last two months when my cousin and my dad came for a visit. I'll start with a place that is quite close to Coventry, where people from all over the world come to visit. The place is called Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. This is actually my third time visiting this place (The first time I was here was when I visited UK back in 2009. I came here again last winter with my mum and my sister) but it's the first time I entered the birthplace and other houses related to Shakespeare's life. Welcome to Stratford Map of the town and the various places of interest First of all, you need a ticket to enter historic buildings. You can buy the ticket online or at the Birthplace Trust. I would really recommend to buy it online as you'll get additional 10% discount with online ticket. There's als
